What happens when a homeowner asks Google's AI Mode to find someone to fix a leak tomorrow morning, and your business isn't on the right software?
As of November 4, you just aren't an option to book.
That day Robby Stein, a VP on Google Search, posted on X that AI Mode now shows direct links to book or request a quote from home service providers. It's live in the US. The partners are Angi, Thumbtack, Housecall Pro and Jobber, with ServiceTitan listed as coming soon. Google's demo shows someone asking for a handyman to put together a bed and a dresser the next day. AI Mode returns local providers with ratings, a short blurb, and in one case two open appointment slots ready to tap.
That's a real shift for local service businesses. The search result used to send people to your profile. Now it can take the appointment.
Who's in, and on what terms
This is where it gets messy, because each partner works differently. Search Engine Journal dug into the details, and the terms vary a lot.
Jobber is the clearest. You need an active paid plan (free trials don't count), a full address in Jobber, and a Google Business Profile linked to Jobber at that same location. Your request or booking form has to be assigned to Google, which Jobber does by default. Once matched, which usually takes a few days, a Book Online button shows on your Business Profile. Jobber says there's no lead fee, bookings follow your schedule, and assessment bookings confirm automatically unless you switch on approval.
Housecall Pro says every pro on its platform is enrolled automatically, at no extra cost, with time slots pulled from your calendar. Its own press release, though, calls the integration "coming soon" for eligible US customers. So check your account before assuming you're live.
Angi sends the homeowner to your Angi profile to request a quote. Angi pros normally pay fees for matches, and nobody has said whether requests that start in AI Mode get charged the same way. Thumbtack hadn't announced anything about it as of November 4.
And if you're on none of these? There's no route to a booking link right now. That's the uncomfortable part for a lot of small shops still running on a paper calendar and a phone.
The question nobody answered
Stein's post doesn't explain how Google decides which businesses show up. That matters more than the booking button.
We'd assume the usual local signals still count: reviews, ratings, proximity, how complete your profile is. But that's our assumption, not something Google has confirmed. Being bookable may help. It may not. We don't know yet, and anyone telling you they've cracked the AI Mode ranking for plumbers this week is guessing.
What we do know is that the listings in the demo lead with ratings and availability. If your Business Profile has 14 reviews and your competitor has 300, a booking link won't save you.
Should you sign up for one of these platforms just for this?
Depends on what you'd pay and what you already use.
Say you run a two-truck HVAC company and you're paying for Local Services Ads. Google's own LSA help page counts booking requests as chargeable leads in the US and Canada. Jobber and Housecall Pro say AI Mode bookings carry no lead fee. If you'd budget, say, $40 a lead on LSA and AI Mode sends you 10 bookings a month at no per-lead cost, that's $400 you aren't spending. Hypothetical numbers, obviously. Nobody has real volume data yet.
We wouldn't switch your whole field service software just to chase this. Migrating jobs, customers and invoices is painful, and this feature is days old. But if you were already shopping for scheduling software, AI Mode support just became a fair tiebreaker.
Here's the short list we'd work through:
- If you use Jobber, confirm you're on a paid plan, your address is complete, and your Google Business Profile is connected at the same location. Then look for the Book Online button over the next few days.
- If you use Housecall Pro, check your account for the Google AI integration status instead of assuming it's on.
- If you're an Angi pro, ask your rep in writing whether AI Mode quote requests are billed like normal leads.
- Whatever you use, keep your calendar honest. An open slot that isn't really open turns into an angry customer and a one-star review.
- Work on reviews. A star rating sits on every listing in the demo, and it's the input you have the most say over.
Google is turning local search into a booking desk, and only businesses on the right software get a seat at it so far.
