Google just made AI answers send more traffic to websites. That's good news. But the clicks are going to the sites the AI already trusts, and right now that probably isn't you.
Lots of business owners will read "more links in AI Mode" and relax. They'll think the traffic problem is solved. It isn't. Google added more doors. You still have to be one of the rooms it points to.
What Google actually changed
On October 15, 2026, Google published More ways to connect with the web from Search, written by Hema Budaraju, a VP of product management. It covers both AI Mode and AI Overviews. Here's the short version:
- Inline links are moving up. Google says it has made big increases to inline links in its AI answers and is now rolling out updates to show them higher in the response more often.
- A box for official websites (test). For some tasks, Google is testing a section at the top of the answer with one or two official pages and a note on why each one is useful.
- Bigger news carousels. Carousels for timely articles, which highlight a person's Preferred Sources, are expanding to more countries, more languages and more types of queries.
- Better-looking links at the bottom. Related links at the end of some answers now get image thumbnails and a more clickable design.
- Clickable creator names (test). On video results in AI Mode, creator and publisher names now link to their Search profiles.
The only number Google shared: Preferred Sources use is up more than 7x since the start of the year. As PPC Land points out, there's no baseline and no click data. So we don't know how many extra clicks this will create. Anyone telling you a percentage is guessing.
Why this matters for your revenue
Think about where a click goes now. A buyer asks AI Mode a question. Google writes the answer. Inside that answer are a handful of links. If you're one of them, you get a warm visitor who already read a summary that mentions you. If you're not, you don't exist for that search.
The official-sites test is the part we'd watch closest. Picture someone asking how to book a service, check an order, or get a quote. If Google pins the brand's own page at the top with a reason to click, that's great for the brand. It's also a clear sign Google wants to know, without doubt, which site is really yours. Messy brand signals (three old domains, a Facebook page with a different phone number, a directory listing with an old address) make that harder.
The thumbnail change matters too. Links with images get noticed more than plain text links. If your pages don't have a strong, relevant featured image, you're bringing a plain link to a picture fight.
Your action plan for this week
Here's what we're doing for our own clients right now.
-
Search your top 10 money questions in AI Mode. Not keywords. Real questions a buyer would ask, like "who installs plantation shutters near me" or "best HubSpot consultant for a small SaaS." Write down which sites get linked. That's your real competition in AI search, and it's often not who you rank against in classic results.
-
Make your official site impossible to confuse. Same business name, address, phone and URL everywhere. Link your site from your Google Business Profile, LinkedIn and social profiles. Use Organization schema with
sameAslinks to those profiles. If Google ever puts an "official site" box above an answer about you, you want it to pick your page, not a reseller or a review site. -
Build one clear page per task. The official-sites test is about tasks. So have a page for each thing people want to do with you: get a quote, book a call, see pricing, track an order, find a location. One task per page, said plainly in the title and first paragraph.
-
Give every important page a real featured image. Original photo, not stock. Set it as the Open Graph image too. Bigger thumbnails only help if the picture is worth clicking.
-
Ask readers to add you as a Preferred Source. If you publish news or regular content, add a simple line and link asking readers to pick you as a preferred source in Google. Use is up 7x this year and Google is now showing those picks in more places.
-
If you make video, claim your profile. Google is testing clickable creator names that link to Search profiles. If YouTube is part of your marketing, check whether you're eligible and set it up.
Our honest take
We think this is a real step in the right direction, and we're glad Google is moving links up instead of burying them. But don't mistake it for a traffic recovery plan. Google gave no click numbers, two of the five changes are only tests, and the links still go to sites the AI already picked as trustworthy.
The businesses that win here are boring in the best way. Clear brand identity. One clear page per job. Good images. Content that answers the exact question a buyer types. None of that is new, but now it decides whether you get the link or your competitor does.
The takeaway: Google opened more doors in AI answers, so make sure your site is the obvious one to point at.
