Here's the hard truth about ChatGPT Ads: the early cheap window is closing, and most businesses are still debating whether AI search is "real."
While they debate, more than 100,000 advertisers have already run campaigns.
What happened
On October 21, 2026, OpenAI announced that ChatGPT Ads expanded to 26 new countries and that over 100,000 advertisers have used the platform. That brings the total to 89 markets, according to PPC Land's coverage.
The newly named markets include Argentina, Chile, Colombia and Peru, plus Nigeria, South Africa, Serbia, Ukraine, Cambodia, Bangladesh and Pakistan. The rest weren't named. Mexico and Brazil were already live, since August 17.
A few facts worth knowing before you spend a dollar:
- Ads only show to people on the Free and Go plans. Plus, Pro and Enterprise users don't see them.
- OpenAI says ads are clearly labeled, kept separate from answers, and don't influence what ChatGPT says.
- OpenAI says it doesn't share conversations with advertisers or sell user data.
- The 100,000 figure is cumulative. It counts anyone who ever ran a campaign, not who's active now or what they spend.
The Next Web reports The Information had the advertiser count around 20,000 in late August. If both numbers are right, that's a lot of new advertisers in under two months. TNW also reports the ad business hit a $1 billion annualized run rate in August. OpenAI is also testing Sponsored Agents with some U.S. advertisers.
Why this matters for your pipeline
New ad channels follow a pattern. Early on, there's little competition and prices are soft. Then everyone shows up and costs climb. Google Ads went through it. Meta went through it. ChatGPT Ads is moving through it faster than either.
The other reason to care: ChatGPT ads don't target keywords the same way search ads do. PPC Land notes ad groups use "context hints" tied to conversation topics. That means the person seeing your ad is mid-conversation, often asking for advice. Think "what CRM should a 10-person sales team use" or "best dentist for implants near me." Those are buying conversations.
And if you serve Latin America, this matters even more now. Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Colombia and Peru are all live. For a lot of local businesses, competitors haven't even heard of this yet.
A word of caution, though. More advertisers doesn't mean better results. We haven't seen independent proof that ChatGPT ads beat Google Search on cost per lead. Treat this as a test, not a migration.
A simple test plan
Here's how we'd run a first test without lighting money on fire.
-
Pick one offer with clear intent. Not your brand awareness message. A specific product or service that people ask advice about. Consultations, demos, quotes, and best-of product categories tend to fit.
-
Set a fixed test budget and a kill date. Decide upfront how much you're willing to spend to learn, and stop on that date unless results earn more money. Thirty days is enough to see if anything's there.
-
Write ads that answer, not shout. The ad sits next to a helpful answer. If yours reads like a banner, it'll look out of place. Lead with the problem you solve and a concrete reason to click.
-
Send clicks to a matching page. If the conversation was about choosing a CRM, the landing page should help them choose, then offer the demo. Don't dump them on your homepage.
-
Track it properly from day one. Use UTM parameters on every ad URL and set up conversion tracking before launch. If you can't tell which leads came from ChatGPT, you can't decide whether to keep going.
-
Compare to your Google Search numbers. Same offer, same landing page, cost per qualified lead side by side. That's the only comparison that matters.
Our opinion
We think ChatGPT Ads are worth a small, disciplined test for most businesses that already get leads from search. We don't think they're worth moving your main budget yet. The audience is real, but the measurement tools are still young and the ads only reach free users.
What we'd avoid is waiting a year to try it. By then you'll be paying more for the same lessons your competitors learned now.
The takeaway: test ChatGPT Ads now with a small budget and real tracking, before the cheap seats are gone.
