Your brand name was the one search you could count on. Someone types it, your site shows up first, they click. Done. That's no longer a safe bet.
What the data shows
On October 2, 2026, Ahrefs published a study on AI Overviews in branded searches, led by Ryan Law. It looked at 232.8 million U.S. desktop Google results from July through September 2026. About 92.5 million of those were branded searches.
Here's what they found:
- AI Overviews showed on 61.3% of branded searches in July, 65.1% in August and 73.3% in September.
- By September 29, the figure was 82.91%.
- In a separate panel of 100 big global brands searched by name alone, AI Overviews went from 5 brands in early July to 63 of 100 by September 30.
- Of those 63, 48 put the AI Overview in position one.
So when someone searches a big brand by name, Google now often shows its own summary of that brand above the brand's website.
And who shapes that summary? In the panel's AI Overviews that listed sources, Wikipedia was cited in 71.9%. YouTube in 38.6%. LinkedIn in 22.8%. Yahoo Finance in 15.8%. Facebook in 10.5%.
Search Engine Journal's coverage compared this with other counts from the same week. DemandSphere tracked branded keywords at 26.12% on September 1, peaking at 90.48% on September 27. SEJ also flags the caveats: the vendors use different methods, these are snapshots, and none of it measures clicks. Ahrefs itself notes Google could change this behavior.
Why it matters for your business
Branded searches are your warmest traffic. These are people who already heard of you. Maybe from a referral, an ad, a podcast. They're checking you out before they buy or call.
Now, before they reach your site, they read a summary. That summary is built mostly from sources you don't control. If your Wikipedia page is outdated, your LinkedIn company page is empty, or the top YouTube video about you is a bad review, that's the story Google tells your best prospects.
Ahrefs mentions an older study of theirs that found a 58% lower click-through rate for the top page when an AI Overview shows. We'd treat that as a warning, not a forecast for your brand. But even a smaller drop on branded searches hurts, because those clicks convert so well.
The good news? Ahrefs found only 2 of 58 full answers talked about competitors. So for now, the AI Overview on your brand name is mostly about you. That means you can shape it.
Fix your brand summary in five steps
-
Google yourself today. Search your brand name, your brand plus "reviews," and your brand plus "pricing." Screenshot the AI Overviews. Note every fact that's wrong or out of date, and note every source it cites.
-
Update what you own off-site. Your LinkedIn company page, your Google Business Profile, your YouTube channel and your social bios. Same description, same founding year, same services, same location. These are cited sources, so treat them like your homepage.
-
Handle Wikipedia the right way. If you have a Wikipedia page, check it for errors. Don't edit it yourself if you have a conflict of interest. Use the talk page to request corrections with sources. If you don't have one, don't buy one. Earn press coverage first.
-
Publish a clear "About" page. Who you are, what you do, who you serve, where you're based, and key facts like founding date and leadership. Write it in plain sentences an AI can lift directly. Add Organization schema with links to your official profiles.
-
Put a video on YouTube about your own brand. YouTube was cited in almost 4 in 10 panel answers. A simple video explaining what you do, with a clear title using your brand name, gives Google a source you control.
Our take
This is the AI search change we'd tell every business owner to care about first. You can debate whether AI Overviews on generic searches matter to your business. You can't debate whether your own brand name matters.
The fix isn't expensive. It's mostly cleanup work on profiles you already have. The businesses that do it now will have Google telling their story the way they'd tell it. Those that don't will let Wikipedia and a random review video do the talking.
The takeaway: Google now introduces your brand before your site does, so make sure the sources it reads are accurate.
